The Michael Steinberg and Jorja Fleezanis Fund Inaugural Concert
The Michael Steinberg and Jorja Fleezanis Fund was created in 2009 as a memorial to Michael Steinberg who passed away in July, 2009. This is a commissioning Fund whose mission statement is "to spur curiosity and growth through the performing arts and the written word". Each new commissioned work will incorporate word to music.
May 8, 2016 marks the world premiere of the first commission by this Fund at a concert to be given in Minneapolis, MN at the MacPhail Center for the Arts, Antonello Hall at 4:00. The composer of the new work is Justin Merritt, Associate Professor of theory and composition at St' Olaf College in Northfield, MN. The work is titled 'Ithaka" based on the poem by C.P. Cavafy, and is written for violin, clarinet, cello, piano and narrator. The performers will be Jorja Fleezanis, violin, David Pharris, clarinet, Anthony Ross, cello, Karl Paulnack, piano and Stephen Yoakam, narrator. The second work on the program will be Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time'.
Mr. Steinberg was a man whose personal mission was to have a public voice in speaking about classical music. He spoke with immediacy and a staggering command of his subject. In his career he was the music critic of the Boston Globe from 1964-75, the program note annotator for the Boston Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony, and a captivating and impassioned speaker at countless pre concert talks for symphony audiences and festivals, setting a remarkable standard of understanding music and those who created it. Oxford University Press has published four books of his program notes and miscellaneous writings.
