Waves of the Past
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION This exhibit is created and designed by students from Asian American Studies 516: Asian American Photographic Explorations, which is taught at San Francisco State University by Prof. Valerie Soe. Sponsored by API Cultural Center as part its 19th annual United States of Asian America Festival 2016. Each student chooses one Asian American person who is important to them and makes a photographic tribute to that person. Each student is free to select the form of the project and to use whatever materials they see fit, as long as it integrates the photographic medium.
Throughout the semester the class has looked at artists books, prints, installations, and multimedia projects that utilize photography as an expressive medium. The class has seen the ways that Asian American artists have used photography as a means of creative expression, as a reflection of the Asian American community, and as a tool for social change. The work in this show reflects the many ways that Asian Americans use photography for art and activism.
