Bellingham City Club Program April 27th, 2016
Are We Really Children of a Common Mother?

Do you wonder why Canadians accept Syrian refugees with open arms while we (or at least many of our national politicians) seem to panic at the idea? Do you wonder why national elections in Canada take about six weeks while ours go on and on seemingly forever?

The acknowledged expert on Canadian and American relations, John Herd Thompson, Professor Emeritus of History from Duke University, will join us to explain why Canadians and Americans perceive the world so differently and will provide answers to the (very large) question of why the United States and Canada diverge politically, socially, and culturally.

John Thompson will compress forty-five years spent explaining Canada to Americans and the United States to Canadians into thirty-five minutes after lunch. He promises no platitudes about special relationships and no solutions to the softwood lumber trade imbroglio.

John is the joint author (with Stephen J. Randall) of Canada and the United States: Ambivalent Allies, jointly published by the University of Georgia Press and McGill-Queens University Press, now in its fourth edition.
