Eric & the Anxiety with Gunther Brown and Colbis the Creature
About Eric Ott and his latest release: In Lieu of Flowers
Like Dylan and other great contemporary storytellers in the vein of Jeff Tweedy, Ryan Adams, and Michael Stipe, Ott is always looking for that next step in a songsmith's progression The next way to craftily, and effectively get stories out to fans without sounding repetitive and stale
In Lieu of Flowers - Remember a time when you would sit on the floor, put your headphones on and listen to a record from start to finish? It took you to a place, perhaps under a sonic wave of angst, romance, sadness, or happiness? With new technology such as the iPod, it took the 45 or later the cassette singles too far and we started cherry picking our favorite songs off these records. We were just choosing snapshots from a vacation rather than enjoying the entire experience. In Lieu of Flowers is a throwback to the Long Playing Format. The LP. It touches on mortality, struggle, aging, suicide and ultimately death. At first it may seem as an arduous listen but pays off in the end as you will be taken to a different place. Like a movie or a book, or like the LP that you might have rolled your first cigarette on.
About Gunther Brown:
Gunther Brown is a four piece Americana rock band from Portland, Maine.
When the current lineup solidified in 2013, work began immediately on Good Nights for Daydreams. Released in January, 2014, Good Nights for Daydreams was Gunther Browns full length debut and received only great reviews, both in the bands hometown and internationally.
The Portland Phoenix said, The guys in Gunther Brown can lay on the biting spite pretty thick, but they also embrace pure emotion. With Gunther Browns debut full-length, frontman Pete Dubuc and crew have created the most sorrowful local record since Ray Lamontagnes Till the Sun Turns Black. AmericanaUK added, Gunther Browns debut album is forty minutes of resignation and despair set to one of the most mournful soundtracks youre likely to hear this year or any other. Leader and songwriter Pete Dubuc is a master of despondency.
Two years later, Gunther Brown releases, North Wind, a new 10 song album, on vinyl, CD and digital formats. Buoyed by the same production team as Good Nights for Daydreams Jonathan Wyman producing and Adam Ayan mastering North Winds tracks show a band growing and exploring. As feedback introduces the albums opening track, its clear North Wind is not setting out to be Good Nights for Daydreams Part II. By the albums closer, Over You, a seven and a half minute journey hinting at jazz, pulling in trumpet, noise and hauntingly looped and decaying spoken word, Gunther Brown has shown theyre able and willing to explore new sonic territory.
