Modern dance artists Non Edwards and Missa Kes are. An old wives monopolylogue, framed anatomy. New perspectives conjured. Episodes of lore and meaning. Essence/Spirit. Fractured. Stomping through metropolises. Gigantas lingerie revealed. A storyline. Big glamour ladies see all. Wicked & weaving. The friendly Giantessas secret: vicious hunger. Women too big for frames. Sky-high magical movement. Projected psycho-horror-thriller-drama of feministic monsteristas. Majesty. Would this dance on any other stage look as big?
Giantessence is oversized, female, imaginary and collaborative. This dance is a grand new pursuit for Edwards and Kes. This is their first fully choreographed evening-length work. In keeping with the experimental from their 19-show improvisational dance residency, Monkey Bar, and their boldness from Super-Mad-Body-Jack, this hardworking duet is unveiling an unseen earnestness with Giantessence.
To be giant is to be excessive, outside the norms of standard convention. To be female is to be other and to be deprived of specific social powers. Edwards and Kes take up, occupy and alter space, creating worlds on stage, on screen, and within the theater. Notorious for its small dimensions, the Bryant-Lake Bowl is a frame that is expanded and diminished throughout a series of choreographed episodes. Employing a fractured narrative format, the artists weave together stories of fables and horror.
The environment will be fixed with a soundscore of serious music, namely classical, jazz and experimental noise. This piece will incorporate projected video throughout. From she-monster horror shorts to text and narrative aid and more, the female behemoth divides into multiple characters, playing with perspective and attempting to disorient the viewers concept of scale.
In their signature styles of embodied dance, collaborative curiosity and performance risk-taking, Edwards and Kes explore huge dancing from the inside out. Modern dance and avant-garde movement emanate from two emotional bodies fine-tuned to the techniques and aesthetics of one another.
--- Missa Kes and Non Edwards have been working together in different iterations of the dancer/choreographer dynamic for over four years. Both dance for Deborah Jinza Thayer/Movement Architecture. Since May 2015, they have been working together as a collaborative team. They performed in Future Interstates in July 2015 and in 9x22 Dance/Lab in July 2015 and February 2016. Their first co-production was Super-Mad-Body-Jack at the Bryant-Lake Bowl in August 2015. They recently concluded their ten-week performing residency, Monkey Bar, at Bedlam Lowertown. Theyre thrilled to be back at the BLB to present Giantessence.
