n Earth Songs we explore the themes, common to all cultures, of love, longing and hope, as expressed in songs of yearning, celebration and nostalgia. Ranging in mood from joyful to sorrowful, the songs are united by a common thread of seeking for connection: to each other, to a remembered homeland, or to the farther shore of enlightenment.
The beauty and healing power of nature is evident as well, in the West Sound premiere of Director Michael Millers composition Ah! Sunflower, the rollicking Celtic Riversong, and the nostalgic Song for the Mira. The exquisitely tender Ashokan Farewell, from the soundtrack of the PBS Series The Civil War depicts the uncertainty of parting, possibly never to meet again
And finally, two of our pieces spring from the pain and tragedy of 20th century political conflicts. Inscription of Hope sets to music words inscribed on the walls of a cellar in Germany where Jews were hiding from the Nazis and hope was all they had left. Pt Vjii, a Latvian folk song, became the unofficial national hymn of Latvia during almost 50 years of Soviet occupation after World War II, when music celebrating national identity was banned .
