AKOUNAK TEDALAT TAHA TAZOUGHAI (Nigerian PURPLE RAIN)
Cinedelphia Film Festival presents AKOUNAK TEDALAT TAHA TAZOUGHAI (Philadelphia Premiere) (2015, 75 min, Dir. Christopher Kirkley)
Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, a Tuareg phrase that literally translates to "rain the color of blue with a little red in it", combines the sound and vision of of contrasting cultures within the framework of Prince's classic film Purple Rain.
In the world's first Tuareg-language fiction film, American filmmaker Christopher Kirkley and self-taught Tuareg musician Mdou Moctar transform the Prince vehicle from rock drama into spiritual odyssey. Filmed in the Nigerian city of Agadez, Moctar portrays a mysterious, motorcycle-riding, purple-robed musician trying to make a name for himself in the city "where guitars are king". The film pulls from a wildly diverse list of cinematic influences - there are borrowed narrative elements taken from revisionist Westerns, the musical detours and manic energy of Jamaican crime films, and the techniques of Italian neo-realism - which hint at cinema's ability to unify disparate groups and ideas. But at its core Akounak is the familiar story of a musician leaving home to find fame and the existential journey he must undergo as his music changes him from man to myth.
