Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present...
Comedy Returns to El Rio!

Comedy Returns to El Rio is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedys Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show, which has been taking place for the past 6-3/4 years at El Rio in San Franciscos Mission District, features an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive, straight, and LGBT comedians from the Bay Area and beyond.

This month features: Sherry Glaser (Off-Broadways longest running one-woman show, Family Secrets), Abhay Nadkarni (originally from South India), Baruch Porras-Hernandez (writer/performer/storyteller), Judi Leff (Director of Arts and Cultural Programs at Congregation Emanu-El), Eve Meyer (Executive Director of SF Suicide Prevention), and Lisa Geduldig (Your hostess).

Sherry Glaser, born and raised in New York and currently living in Mendocino, is the star and author of Off-Broadways longest running one-woman show, Family Secrets. She developed her passion for solo performance while practicing improv in the early 1980's in San Diego in the company of Whoopi Goldberg, Mo Gaffney, and Kathy Najimy. It seemed that much of her life was painfully hilarious so she decided with her then-husband, Greg Howells, to create her first solo show, Coping, and moved to LA in 1989 after she received a contract from Warner Brothers Studio. She explored the world of sitcoms but found live original theater to be a stronger representation of her work. (In other words, Hollywood didn't know what to do with her.) Sherry then went national with her show, garnering critical acclaim, including LA's Outer Critic's Circle Award, South Florida's Carbonell Award for Best Actress, NY Theatre World Award for Best Debut, a Nomination of a Drama Desk Award and LA's Ovation Award. Simon & Schuster published Sherry's autobiography based on her Off-Broadway success Family Secrets: One Woman's Look at A Relatively Painful Subject. Sherry's other stage works include Oh My Goddess!, and The Breast of Sherry Glaser aka All We Are Saying. She has performed comedy and led dramatic workshops at San Quentin and was also a founding member of the Peace Activist Group, Breasts Not Bombs, which recently won a lawsuit against the CHP for violation of her civil rights. Sherry established legal protection for women to demonstrate topless without being arrested in California and is the founder of Love In It Cooperative, a medical cannabis dispensary in Mendocino. Her adventures in the world of cannabis led to the creation of her latest one-woman show, Taking The High Road (Comic Confessions from Behind the Cannabis Curtain). Sherry lives on the Mendocino Coast with her wife, three daughters, granddaughter, and a huge tribal family. She has recently entered the world of stand up comedy with a new work she calls, Funny Lookin. www.sherryglaser.net

Abhay Nadkarni moved from South India to South Central Los Angeles in 2005 as a student. Dodging bullets en-route to grad school armed him with plenty of stories and standup was his only catharsis for combating culture shock. His act is an eclectic mix of his life on the road across the US. He has performed at SF Sketchfest (2015, 2016), San Diego Comedy Festival (2015) and was in the best of the fest at the Burbank Comedy Festival in 2014 and 2015. Abhay recently did a three-city tour of India and was part of The Weirdass Pajama Comedy Festival in Mumbai. Follow him on Twitter @abhayoye www.ComedianAbhay.com

Baruch Porras-Hernandez has done stand up at Bravas New Years Eve Comedy Fiesta, Brainwash Cafe, Hysteria Queer Comedy Open mic, QComedy, and Marga Gomezs Comedy Bodega at Esta Noche. He is the voice of SHIPWRECK SF, and as a writer he has performed all over the place: NYC, LA, DC, and parts of Canada, from The Moth to drag cabarets, from fancy universities to dark, damp caves. You can read some of his funny writings here The Tusk, and here Drunk in a Midnight Choir. Baruch was born in Mexico and lives in San Francisco where he pigs out on gummy bears. Judi Leff is a San Francisco native who has been making people laugh ever since she took her first math test. For decades Judi has taught, lectured, written, performed, directed, and/or produced Jewish humor and comedy in the Bay Area Jewish community; she specializes in parody songwriting. Judi is currently Congregation Emanu-Els Director of Arts and Cultural Programs and is returning to the comedy stage after a brief hiatus (23 years). It will be her first time performing at El Rio.

Eve Meyer has spent the last 23 years as The Executive Director of San Francisco Suicide Prevention and the last 24 years as the mother of Gabriel Edlin, who knows a lot about motorcycle maintenance. Along the way she developed a sense of humor. She honed her skills doing solo performances at The Marsh, appearances at the annual Camp Mather talent shows, and attempts to organize her weekly agency staff meetings. This will be Eve's third time at El Rio.

Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 24th year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
