All That Jazz -- The Fosse Style -- John Frey
Director-choreographer Bob Fosse was the most influential figure in the field of jazz dance in the 20th century. Enormously creative, inspired, driver, strong-willed, tireless, and ruthless, Fosse forged an uncompromising modern style characterized by finger-snapping, tilted bowler hats, net stockings, splayed gloved fingers, turned-in-knees and toes, and shoulder rolls. Fosse was fluent in a dizzying mix of styles; he incorporated elements of ballet, jazz, march, cancan and gypsy dance, and the traditional English music-hall in his productions.
His 1979 film "All That Jazz", written, directly and choreographed by himself, laid it all out his compulsive chain-smoking, drinking, drug-taking and womanizing.
In this four session course we will try to capture that enthusiasm for life by viewing four Fosse-related films and then talking about these films together in a class.
In this course you will view four DVD films. These are movie musicals that feature the Fosse style: Fosse, Cabaret, Chicago, and All That Jazz. Following each film your instructor John Frey will lead a discussion about what you have just seen.
Fosse was an artist whose work was provocative, entertaining, and quite unlike anything ever seen before. He won an unprecedented 8 Tony Awards for Choreography plus one for stage direction; he won an Oscar for his directions of the film version of Cabaret (1972), and received 3 other Academy Award nominations. This course is your front-row ticket to rediscover and celebrate the luminous talents of Bob Fosse. Grab some popcorn and take your seat.
John Frey taught chemistry and engaged in chemical research for 40 years and is now retired. He has served on various boards including OperaSLO, LLCC, Opera Lovers Meet, Cuesta Master Chorale and Festival Mozaic. He participated in numerous musical events as a member of several choral groups and in 12 productions of Pacific Repertory Opera and OperaSLO. He organized and offered numerous courses on opera and musical theater.
Registering for this course by buying a ticket will admit you to all 4 sessions of this course.
