A HIGHWAY RUNS THROUGH IT
Combining vintage photographs, historic and newspaper research and interviews with elder and longtime residents, this documentary traces the story of Darby Township, Pennsylvania's African American community from 18th century indentured servitude and post-civil war prosperity, through the Great Migration of the 1920s, to the redevelopment movement starting in the late 1950s and its impact on Darby Township today. Despite widespread community displacement, the loss of cultural landmarks, and increasing political marginalization, the film celebrates the resilience of this black suburban community outside of Philadelphia and the enduring spirit that has defined their presence in the area for more than 220 years. Provides a unique, historical perspective on the settlement and displacement of a non-urban black community in the northern United States.
