Quartet of Spherists
The February 28th concert hosted by the Estes Park Music Festival will feature a quartet of Spherists from, the Sphere Ensemble. The quartet of Spherists, members of the full ensemble: Chris Short and Sarah Whitnah, violin; Aniel Caban, viola; and Beth Rosbach, cello, will perform works by Schubert, Beethoven, Bartok, as well as arrangements of Gershwin, Arvo Pärt. These classical standards will be interspersed with music of Peru, a jazz-inflected blues tune written for strings, and progressive British rock. This embrace of musical variety is a trademark of Sphere's full-ensemble performances, and the Sphere quartet is pleased to bring their diverse programming to Estes Park for the first time.

The complete Sphere Ensemble is comprised of 13 professional string players who reside in the Denver/Boulder area. The group made its debut in 2011 to glowing reviews and has since performed at numerous venues across the state. The diverse musical background of Sphere's members allows it to be equally at home with the repertoire of composers like Mendelssohn or Shostakovich and the music of Regina Spektor, Radiohead and Nina Simone. This musical flexibility is further highlighted by the group's unique arrangements and original works that showcase the talents of its individual members. Sphere's debut album, released in September, was selected by Colorado Public Radio as a top album of 2015.

Cellist Beth Rosbach is a founding member and Executive Director of Sphere, a position which has led her to supplement her musical training with studies of non-profit administration, budgets, and grant writing. She is also the owner and sole proprietor of Colorado Cello, which provides cello lessons and private performances throughout Colorado. Ms. Rosbach pursued her music studies at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Colorado-Boulder. She is splitting her time this year between Boulder and Boston, where her husband McKinley Lawson has a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Violinist Chris Short is a founding member of Sphere, and serves as the group's Operations Manager and Music Librarian. She holds degrees in violin performance from Ithaca College and the University of Colorado-Boulder. In addition to Sphere, she performs with the Fort Collins Symphony, the Greeley Philharmonic, the Boulder Philharmonic, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Colorado Bach Ensemble, Pro Musica Colorado, Opera Colorado, and the Colorado Music Festival. Chris' husband, David Short, is also a founding member of Sphere as well as Artistic Director.

Sarah Whitnah is an avid and experienced chamber musician. Taking an active role in supporting new music and todays emerging composers, she also currently performs with the new music ensemble, The Playground Ensemble, Artists-in-Residence at Colorado Metro State University. She recently accepted a position with the Fort Collins Symphony. Ms. Whitnah holds a Bachelors Degree in Violin Performance from St. Olaf College and a Masters Degree from the University of Denver where she studied with violinist Linda Wang. Ms. Whitnah performs frequently in the city of Denver and also maintains a private teaching studio.

Sphere violist Aniel Caban received a Bachelor of Music degree in Viola Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music (2002) and a Master of Music degree from the University of Colorado-Boulder (2006), where he was the recipient of The Gabor Ormai Viola Award. He has held the position of Principal Viola of the Boulder Chamber Orchestra since 2005 and is also a section member of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra and is one of the original members of Sphere Ensemble.
