Tabla + Toy Piano
On April 2, 2016 at 8 p.m. Shawn Mativetsky (tabla) and Xenia Pestova (keyboards) will create an intimate experience, deeply influenced by the warmth and intimacy of Indian music while exploring the unusual combination of tabla, toy piano and Indian harmonium. Acclaimed soloists renowned for their interpretations of traditional and contemporary repertoire, the two joined forces in 2010 to record Canadian composer Nicole Lizée's Metal Jacket for tabla and harmonium. Their continued collaboration results in the combines practices of North Indian classical music with Western contemporary techniques, featuring new music written especially for them by Canadian composers Monica Pearce and Tina Pearson, amongst others.
Their performance includes Nicloe Lizées Metal Jacket, Tina Pearsons Migration of Their Materials, and Monica Pearces damask, as well as improvisations, and traditional music. This concert brings a fascinating duality to the stage as two different sound worlds, idioms, and traditions meet.
