The Evolution of Power in Oakland: A Stairwells Field Trip for Open Engagement 2016
'The Evolution of Power in Oakland' is an interactive artist-led walking tour developed by Stairwell's for the 2016 Open Engagement conference.
Beginning and ending at the Oakland Museum of California, the walk traces the evolution of power in the alternate definition of the word (energy that is produced by mechanical, electrical or other means). From campfires to solar energy, we'll chart the history of Oakland (from the Huchiun Indians to present day) through the ways in which it created and consumed power. The walking tour will include group games, unconventional data gathering and impromptu field recordings to expand collective understandings of place and the everyday.
This 90-minute outdoor group excursion is led by Stairwell's co-directors Sarah Hotchkiss and Carey Lin. We will meet at the Oakland Museum of California beginning at 11:45 AM and depart promptly at 12 PM. Ticket price includes activity supplies and refreshments.
