Trinity House Theatre Benefit Concert featuring Red Tail Ring, Matt Watroba and Olivia Millerschin
RED TAIL RING is the musical brainchild of two old-time-minded Michiganders  Michael Beauchamp and Laurel Premo. The collaboration blends the loving attention of revivalist fervor with the playful creativity of starting from scratch. Whether rendering a traditional tune or one of their many original compositions, the duo infuses each song with musical imagination, haunting harmonies and instrumental artistry on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, jawharp, and plain-old foot stomping. We love pushing the boundaries of what a traditional song can be, says Beauchamp. It informs how we write our original songs. Theres a real energy exchange between the old and the new.

This two-way connection takes center stage with Red Tail Rings first pair of recordings released in April 2011 on Earthwork Music, Middlewest Chant and Mountain Shout. The set forms a complete picture of Red Tail Rings blending of old with new. Middlewest Chant is comprised of all original songs, while Mountain Shout features Red Tail Rings interpretations of Appalachian ballads and melodies. We tried to weave the music on these two albums together not only with similar musical treatment, but with running lyric lines and shared songforms, Premo says.

In May 2013, Red Tail Ring released their third full-length album. The Hearts Swift Foot presents 10 original songs with two acoustic standards that stretch the confines of what two people can create sonically. The duos signature style, of layered, intricate instrumental lines over close vocal harmonies, shines on this new collection. We crafted the recording to be as close to our live performance as possible, Beauchamp says. We feel were at our best when were playing together, listening and reacting as we go along. As a whole, the lyrics of The Hearts Swift Foot explore changes that come without warning, and the malleability of relationships and friendships.

In 2014, Premo and Beauchamp collaborated in a wider circle and produced two joint releases. The New Roots Exchange is a vinyl project created with the marvelous bluegrass band Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys.  The Right Hands Round is a recording of energetic square dance music with the stringband Bowhunter.

Since the release of their 2011 double-album, Red Tail Ring has remained busy, playing as many as 130 shows a year, with tours to both U.S. coasts as well as Denmark and Germany  exporting some Midwest sounds, as Premo puts it.

For Premo and Beauchamp, Red Tail Ring encircles their present and future  a place where expansion and creativity meet tradition, and thrive.

Veteran performer, teacher, radio host, song writer...the list goes on, but what Matt prefers to be known as is a community singer, song leader and educator.

His love of folk music led him to his position as the host and creator of the popular Folks Like Us program, a position he held for over 20 years on WDET-FM In Detroit. He also produced and hosted the syndicated, Sing Out! Radio Magazine heard on the XM Satellite network as well as the internet service Folk Alley.

Matt sings and writes songs of compassion, inner strength, humor, and every day living. He was awarded "Best Overall Folk Performer" by the Detroit Music Awards for the year 2000, and his long list of credits include the prestigious Ann Arbor Folk Festival, the Detroit 300 Celebration, The Ark, Louisvilles Kentucky Music Weekend, The Fox Valley Festival, Chicago IL, The Old Songs Festival, Guilderland, NY, Owen Sound Folk Festival, Ontario, Canada and hundreds of school and community presentations throughout the Great Lakes region. He has shared the stage with some of our greatest performers, including Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Ramblin Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie, Christine Lavin, Peter Yarrow, and Richard Thompson. He sings songs that you will feel and remember for a long time. You will love his music, you will love the journey that his music takes you on, and you will love the place that his music takes you to.

Matt brings a unique set of talents to the stage as an educator, performer and master of ceremonies.  His passion for bringing community together through music and education is infectious. Add to that Matt's own special brand of humor and you are in for a most entertaining and enlightening experience.

Clever and witty, melodic and musically quirky as ever, Olivia Millerschin is feeling a bit Over The Weather. these days, infusing her latest EP with all the colorful elements (Indie, Folk, Soul) and wry turns of phrase that made her debut, self-produced album Yes.No.Maybe So. so popular and infectious, leading to its nominations for three 2014 Detroit Music Awards and radio play nationwide.

Only now, the multi-talented singer/songwriter is penning her observational gems from a fresh starting point: 19 years old, one year of college completed and a full year of touring under her belt. The EPs first single We Know Not was produced by Andrew Williams (Colbie Caillat, Five For Fighting). Her growing songwriting abilities helped in her recent signing with BMG Fieldhouse Licensing.

Having toured with Teddy Geiger, Tyler Hilton, Orla Gartland, Ryan Cabrera, and Howie Day, Olivia has had pretty busy year. Not so busy though, to keep her from winning a John Lennon Songwriting Award, making the quarter-finals on the NBC reality show Americas Got Talent, and embarking on her own 40 city, cross-country college tour.

This year, Olivia is hoping to wind down and focus on writing more material for a couple upcoming movie soundtracks and work on a brand new record.
