The Evolving Downtown and CityPlace
This program is open to the public. AIA members will receive 1.5 Continuing Education Units. A taco cart will be available. Advance registration is required; $5 per person to attend.
Description: How does a city of over half a million people take on the task of developing an isolated shopping center located in the heart of its urban downtown? Coupled with the fact that of the centers 30 plus tenants, its largest, Wal Mart, recently closed its doors following other additional departures from national brands of various scales such as Nordstrom Rack, Fresh and Easy and Ms. Fields Cookies. This program will provide an overview of the process that the City of Long Beach and the owner of CityPlace shopping center have undertaken to revitalize six square blocks of property. Presenters will include city officials and members of the design team who will discuss the issues with the current design and the challenges of incorporating relevant ideas that respond to evolving local demographics and broader shopping habits and trends.
Objectives: 1. Participants will learn how a private company and a large city develop a strategic plan by involving local architects. 2. Participants will learn how architects take an inward centered retail shopping area and repurpose and reposition itself, providing its tenants and their customers with a positive experience; 3. Participants will be presented with a variety of ways to incorporate facade improvements, a creative tenant mix, art, landscape, and enhanced street design to create an authentic sense of place. 4. Participants will tour the development project and see first-hand how the architects vision is being implemented and how adjacent land owners are leveraging their properties.
