Architectural History of Computing by Ingrid Burrington
This two-hour session will be half field expedition, half lecture and workshop to teach students about the histories and politics underlying technologies that, today, are easily taken for granted but are often hidden in plain sight--especially in New York.
We'll begin by meeting at a location relevant to telecommunications history in New York City and walk to SFPC. Along the route, we'll learn about and document different indicators of networked systems past and present. We'll wrap up with a lecture, discussion, and collaborative mapping activity at SFPC.
This course has no coding requirements, but it is very helpful to have a digital camera or phone with a camera (ideally one that stores location metadata) and decent walking shoes.
