San Jose Youth Symphony's Philharmonic Orchestra Presents Its 2016 Spring Concert!
The San Jose Youth Symphony's Philharmonic Orchestra, under the artistic leadership of Music Director and Conductor Yair Samet, presents its 2016 Spring Concert to be held on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at 8:00 pm at the California Theatre, 345 S. 1st Street, San Jose, CA 95113.
The program will open with Rossini's La Gazza Ladra Overture and will conclude with Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. This concert will also showcase winners from the 2015 Young Artists' Competition, proudly sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation. Two outstanding young soloists will be featured: Lauren Collar, flutist, performing Gordeli's Concertino for Flute and Orchestra; and Minki Kim, cellist, performing Lalo's Cello Concerto in D minor.
Lauren Collar is a senior at Branham High School and has been playing flute since age 9. She has been a member of the San Jose Youth Symphony's Philharmonic Orchestra for four years.
Minki Kim is also a senior at Leland High School, and has studied cello since he was 8. He is now in his fourth year with the Philharmonic Orchestra.
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) is one of the oldest and finest youth orchestras on the West Coast of the U.S. Founded over six decades ago as part of the former San Jose Symphony, SJYS has a rich tradition of musical performance and education.
The mission of SJYS is to provide the youth of our culturally diverse community with exceptional orchestral music education and performance experiences that foster and encourage the study, appreciation and love of music throughout the entire community.
The musicians of SJYS, all school-age youth, are chosen from more than 600 applicants through our annual auditions. The SJYS comprises 11 distinct performing ensembles: two full orchestras, a Chamber orchestra, two flute choirs, two string ensembles, as well as winds, harp, saxophone, and percussion ensembles.
