The Sholem Aleichem Variety Show
To honor the 100th yortsayt of the great Yiddish writer, Sholem Aleichem, Jewish Currents presents an evening of music, performance, film, poetry, and great Jewish jokes featuring the Gilbert & Sullivanesque singer-songwriter, DANIEL CAINER, the inimitable performance artist MIKHAIL HOROWITZ (with Gilles Malkine), actress ANN CITRON, and Jewish Currents editor LAWRENCE BUSH. We sold out the 280-seat Rosendale Cinema with our first edition of this variety show in 2013, and we aim to do it again.
Sholem Aleichem was the author of the book on which FIDDLER ON THE ROOF was based, and was the most beloved Yiddish writer, a rock star in his day. In his last will and testament (which will be read), he asked that his yortsayt (death anniversary) be observed each year through the reading of his work in whatever language. We'll be featuring a Sholem Aleichem story, as well as latter-day Jewish words and songs that speak in Sholem Aleichem's spirit as an artist of hilarity and poignancy.
