Peacock Taxidermy Demonstration with Taxidermist in Residence Divya Anantharaman
Date: Thursday, May 5th Time: 7pm Admission: $20 Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn NY
Join us for an evening with professional taxidermist and Morbid Anatomy Museum resident Divya Anantharaman Zweigart as she shows how a peacock is transformed from raw specimen to a finished taxidermy piece! She will be demonstrating the preparatory steps of the taxidermy process, basic bird anatomy and its relevance to a successful taxidermy piece, and describing specific skinning, fleshing, and preservation techniques used for birds. She will also be discussing conservation laws such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and sharing general knowledge about the taxidermy industry. The floor will be open for Q&A during and after the demo.
The peacock used in this demonstration is a domestically raised bird that died of old age.
Divya Anantharaman is a Morbid Anatomy Museum Taxidermist in Residence and a Brooklyn based artist whose taxidermy practice was sparked by a lifelong fascination with the intersection of natural mythology and science. With a combination of self and professional training, she has found her calling in creating sweet and sparkly critters. Winner of a Best in Show trophy and Best in Category ribbon at the GSTA taxidermy show and competition, her work is on display in the Chamber of Wonders at the Walters Art Museum, and has been profiled in numerous publications as varied as National Geographic, The NY Times, The Cut, Vice, BBC Science Radio, Breakthrough Magazine (the premiere taxidermy industry publication), and on hit Discovery/Science Channel TV show Oddities. She is also a member of the G.S.T.A. (Garden State Taxidermists Association) and regularly competes in regional taxidermy shows. You can find out more at www.friendsforevertaxidermy.com
