Julia Holter with Hundred Waters
"Ekstasis is not the sort of oceanic wash you lose yourself in; instead, Holter's music has a way of snapping tiny moments and small sonic gestures into focus. Ekstasis is above all smart, and it makes no apologies for it." - Pitchfork
With her first two albums, Tragedy and Ekstasis, Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Julia Holter has offered an uncanny vision of classical beauty, intellectual rigor and experimental pop craft. Informed by the magnetism of illuminated medieval manuscripts, Holter's work draws the listener deep into its exquisite atmospheres and precise compositional arrangements. An obvious affinity with Laurie Anderson's oeuvre is present, but this complex and transfixing music is wholly new. Opening the night, Gainsville, FL's Hundred Waters weave a bewitching tapestry of digital folk music, confidently blending sophisticated loops and pastoral traditions.
