Tuesdays in the Newsroom:Filmmaker Stanley Nelson
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson is this month's guest for Tuesdays in the Newsroom, a discussion series in which the public is invited into the Gazette newsroom for an intimate interview with newsmakers. Mr. Nelson most recent film, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party.
A lifelong seasonal resident of Oak Bluffs, Mr. Nelson has spent his professional career exploring lesser known stories in black history as writer, director and producer of some two dozen films. A graduate of the City University of New York film school, he has received fellowships at American Film Institute, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and Columbia University and was the recipient of a 2002 MacArthur Fellows Program Fellowship. His 2010 film Freedom Riders about the civil rights activists of the early 1960s, won three Primetime Emmy awards including one for exceptional merit in nonfiction filmmaking.
