Hot off of our sold out run at The High Performance Rodeo, Ghost River Theatre, is remounting their award winning adaptation of Ray Bradbury's sci-fi short story Tomorrows Child as a one-of-kind sightless theatre experience. Audience members are blindfolded and individually guided into the performance space to a swivel seat. The story surrounds them through a thrilling sonic landscape created by GRT Artistic Director Eric Rose and long-term GRT collaborator Matthew Waddell and powered by Calgary audio gods PK Sound.
The Story: Bradbury's classic short story presents two new parents in an imagined future confronting the realities of their newborn son--who has been born into another dimension. Will they accept the divide between parent and child? Or find another solution? The story, which was written in 1948, presents a sci-fi retro-futuristic 1980s setting in which machines have taken over many jobs. Polly Horn is the victim of a malfunctioning birthing mech during the delivery of her first child, which causes the baby to be born into another dimension. The result is the baby appears to them as a blue pyramid with tentacles who communicates through high pitch sounds. The action of the play centres on her and her husband Peters attempts to deal with the repercussions of having a child who is different. Our production highlighted a contemporary connection that of parents attempting to raise a child who is autistic.
Tomorrows Child has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for two 2015 Betty Mitchell Theatre Awards for Outstanding Sound Design Or Composition (Waddell and Rose), and for Outstanding New Play (Waddell, Rose and David van Belle) along with winning Waddell the 2014 Critics Award for Technological Achievement.
The goal is to find out what the full theatrical potential of sound is, say Rose and Waddell. By taking away the audiences primary tool for perceiving story sight were offering an unique and rare sensory experience. Its a thrilling act of deep listening.
About The Six Senses Performance Series: Combining innovative storytelling and the latest in scientific and performance research, GRTs Six Senses Series explores the complex interaction between our inner selves and our perceptions of the outer world. This imaginative territory brings together some of Calgary's best artists and experts drawn from a wide range of disciplines to offer one-of-a-kind spine-tingling, mind-expanding sensorial experiences. Over the next few years, the award-winning team at GRT will create a series of six unique performance experiences based on each one of the senses (touch, hearing, smell, sight, taste and our own addition: intuition). Tomorrows Child explores the theatrical potential of our sense of hearing, this past September we created TASTE with the River Café / Vertical City, in addition to the first ever multi-sensory Scotch Tasting - TASTING SCOTCH with Kensington Wine Market. Next up, we will tackle TOUCH in partnership with a Aveda Institute Salon.
