THE IMPROVISER'S TOOL KIT: Skills For Creative Thinking and Acting Under Pressure
This activity is approved by the New York State Education Department's Board for Social Work to provide 4 contact hours of Continuing Education
Situations of complexity and uncertainty are what social workers deal with on a daily basis. Applied Improvisation - the use of techniques, exercises, and games used in theatrical improvisation for real-life goals - is the ideal training approach for strengthening the ability to think on one's' feet, shift gears and think creatively under pressure. Skills learned through the exercises and games used in Applied Improvisation are immediately useful in professional practice and in work with clients, students and training situations.
The exercises and games are designed to convey specific concepts, clarify the application of these concepts to professional practice, and demonstrate and cultivate relationship skills that are essential to success in the field. This workshop will use warm-ups and exercises that reduce anxiety and self-consciousness and at the same time engage with situations of uncertainty and unpredictability, stimulate creative thinking while under pressure and demonstrate techniques for strengthening the emotional connections that drive successful interactions in social work.
You will learn:
The 5 fundamental skills of dynamic interaction learned through improvisation;
Skills for managing uncertainty that can be adapted for work with a variety of client populations;
Techniques that can be used to help clients listen and communicate in highly emotional interactions;
Applications of the improviser's tool kit in situations of complexity;
How and why creative interactions engage the "reward" centers of the brain and can be designed to focus on specific goals for learning and change;
