New Esterházy Quartet plays Haydn's 7 Last Words
Barefoot Chamber presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events. For this special event, Barefoot presents The New Esterházy Quartet (Kati Kyme and Lisa Weiss, violins; Anthony Martin, viola; and Bill Skeen, cello) playing Josef Haydns setting of the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross in a performance similar to the original setting.
Commissioned in 1783 for the Good Friday service in Cadiz, the work consists of a prelude, then seven slow movements, each written to correspond to one of the seven last words of Jesus Christ on the cross, and finally, a musical depiction of an earthquake. In keeping with the original performance, the music is separated by brief readings reflecting the words Christ spoke (in this performance, the readings have been selected by the Very Reverend Alan Jones, Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco).
The event will start at 10 pm. Seven candles will be lit. At the conclusion of each section, a candle will be extinguished and the event will conclude in darkness.
