Fiddle Masters with Brian Wicklund
Brian Wicklund and a band of hand-picked musicians from around the country return for a concert of fiddle music sourced from around the globe. This year features fiddlers Brian Wicklund, Katie McNally, Mia Friedman, and Andy Reiner; cellist Ariel Friedman, guitarist Flynn Cohen, and bassist Bekka Schellenberg. Past concerts have included fiddle music from the American West, Appalachia, and Canada; Kentucky bluegrass; traditional Irish and Scottish fiddling styles; Scandinavian fiddle; jazz; and the blues.
Brian Wicklund (Marine, MN) is widely regarded as among the top fiddle teachers and performers in the country. He has toured internationally in bands with Stoney Lonesome, Judith Edelman, Kathy Kallick, Lorie Line, Chris Stuart Band, and Brother Mule. He is a busy studio musician, teacher and author of the best-selling, American Fiddle Method published by Mel Bay with over 100,000 copies sold. He teaches fiddle and mandolin at camps throughout the US, UK, Canada and Sweden. He hosts his summer week-long American Fiddle Camps in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Massachusetts. Katie McNally (Boston, MA) grew up steeped in the vibrant Scottish and Cape Breton music community in Boston and is a recent graduate of Tufts University where she studied music and Child Development. She has performed across the US with Galician piper Carlos Núñez, fiddle supergroup Childsplay, and in her own duo with guitarist Eric McDonald.
Mia Friedman (Boston, MA) is a recent graduate from the New England Conservatory where she studied fiddle and voice. She performs all over the country with her sister, Ari Friedman, and spends a lot of time composing. Mia was the winner of the 2007 New Hampshire Highland Games Scottish Fiddle competition, and now enjoys playing lots of old time fiddle tunes, Scandinavian music, and Celtic music.
Ariel Friedman, Cello (Boston, MA), Winner of ASTA's 2009 Alternative Styles Award, she has a masters degree from New England Conservatory. Her diverse musicality adds to performances with her acclaimed sibling band, Ari & Mia, champion fiddler Hanneke Cassel and supergroup Childsplay and she has taught at music programs from New England to New Zealand. www.ariandmiamusic.com
Flynn Cohen (Massachusetts) has performed internationally with many traditional and contemporary acoustic groups. He studied music in England and California and is on the music department staff at Keene State College in NH.
Andy Reiner (Colorado) began playing at age five with the Reiner Family Band. Touring nationally and internationally with a variety of original music bands from heavy metal to Swedish to Old Time to Electronic/Celtic to jam band, Andy also composes fiddle tunes, songs, new works, and arrangements for string orchestra and teaches improvisation, composition and fiddle styles in schools and at music camps across the US.
Bekka Schellenberg (Massachusetts) began playing violin at the age of three. She added piano and cello in grade school but spent high school orchestra behind a bass. Although considering herself a violinist first, her second love is the bass. She is a professional Suzuki teacher and performs regularly with classical ensembles, pit orchestras, and a string band with her husband on banjo.
