ASCE COPRI Seattle Chapter Monthly Dinner Meeting - Feb 24, 2015
Topic: Permanent Canal Closures and Pumping, USACE Project / New Orleans, Louisiana. 2013-2017
The presentation will provide an overview of an ongoing project to construct three new high capacity pump stations on the main drainage canals of New Orleans at 17th Street, London Avenue, and Orleans Canal. The project is a design build effort for the Corps of Engineers ($680M), with Kiewit/Traylor/MR Pittman as the construction Joint Venture, and Stantec Consulting as the Designer. PND is a subcontractor to Stantec for temporary works, and support of excavation. The pump stations are the capstone of effort for Post Hurricane Katrina reconstruction and increased flood projection for New Orleans. Topics for the presentation will include the historical background to the project, and a high level summary of the challenges to design/construct deep cofferdams in the soft ground of New Orleans under the design/build contract delivery method.
