Come join us for an amazing show!
For almost two decades, Spottiswoode & His Enemies have been a constantly self-reinventing New York institution [after they bailed on DC, that is... -ed]. The Multiple Independent Music Award Winners and Nominees have hosted residencies at the former punk mecca Coney Island High, the old lounge venue Fez, both of the former Manhattan Living Rooms and also at Joe's Pub.
The band has drawn comparisons to everyone from Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman to Ray Davies and Nick Cave. They have been profiled on Weekend Edition on NPR, World Cafe and Soundcheck and have also toured worldwide. Paste Magazine describes the live show as ânothing short of transportive!â
2015 was a good year for the band. Their sixth studio album, English Dream, earned them yet another Independent Music Award Nomination (Best Adult Contemporary Album Of The Year). Their haunting rocker "All In The Past" was used as the climactic closing track in the final episode of the hit Netflix series, Bloodline, while another of Spottiswoode's songs, the title track of his recent solo release Blaze Of Glory, featured prominently in the DirecTV series Kingdom. On top of that, the pathologically commitment-phobic frontman finally became a father!
Referred to as a "genius" and a "downtown ringleader" by The New Yorker, Spottiswoode is the son of an American singer and an English clergyman. WYNC''s John Schaefer describes him as "one of New York's more colorful band leaders for more than a decade." His songs have been covered by numerous artists and have been featured in a variety of films and television shows (She's Out Of My League, The Ledge, Secret Circle, Tart, Bridget, Bloodline, Kingdom), as well as in his own short film, The Gentleman, which played for several years on the Independent Film Channel. His gothic rock opera, Above Hell's Kitchen, was presented to sold-out crowds at the prestigious New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2010.
Spottiswoode & His Enemies features Spottiswoode (vocals and guitar) John Young (bass), Tim Vaill (drums), Candace DeBartolo (saxophone), Kevin Cordt (trumpet), Riley McMahon (guitar, mandolin, glockenspiel), and Tony Lauria (piano, accordion, keyboards).
