Voices of LA: Songs of Innocence
The Hollywood Master Chorale will perform compositions by the winners of its "Voices of LA" emerging composers competition: Joshua Fishbein, Saad Haddad, Jordan Nelson, and Mark Popeney. They have been commissioned to write choral pieces for the Hollywood Master Chorale based on text from William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience." This is the first of a two-year cycle, when the composers set to music text from any of the 19 poems in the "Innocence" section of the book. Next year, these same composers will choose texts from the "Experience" part, and create compositions in collaboration with established Los Angeles-based composers. In this concert, the Chorale will also perform works by William Billings, long considered the father of American choral music, and Samuel Barber, as well as pieces by Los Angeles-based composers Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre.
