Bela Lugosi Night (ft. Mark Iveson talk & 'White Zombie' screening)
A second chance to experience this evening dedicated to horror cinema icon Bela Lugosi in the Great Hall of Newcastle Castle Keep.
** Please note: The Great Hall of the Castle Keep, where this event takes place, is unfortunately inaccessible to wheelchair users. There is also no central heating, so please wrap up warm. **
The Hungarian actor who won immediate fame for playing the immortal count in the 1931 film Dracula, battled for the rest of his life against restrictive typecasting, and his last years were spent as a forgotten and rather tragic figure.
Mark Iveson - author of the book Cursed Horror Stars - will present a talk about the life and times of Lugosi, who became the world's most recognisable vampire before spending decades trying vainly to broaden his range and secure parts to challenge his acting abilities.
This will be followed by a screening of 1932 cult classic White Zombie - in which Lugosi, at the height of his fame, plays a ghoulish witch doctor who plots to make a beautiful young lady fall ill, die, and return to his castle as his slave. Not your typical love story, but then neither was Lugosi anything like your typical film star.
