LAWOMENSFEST: Shorts Program Two
Curated by Female Eye Film Festival Artistic Director, Leslie-Ann Coles
Toronto Alice, directed by Jennifer Linton. The character of Alice from Lewis Carroll's 'Through the Looking-Glass' is transported to contemporary Toronto. Whilst riding a streetcar, Alice encounters a pair of strange characters who engage her in an equally strange debate over whether or not they exist. The dialogue is borrowed directly from Carroll, but given a fresh and funny new twist in this short stop-motion animation.
Sight, directed by Thirza Cuthand. Super 8 footage layered with Sharpie marked lines and circles obscuring the image illustrates the story of the filmmakers experience with temporary episodes of migraine related blindness and her cousins self induced blindness later in life. Paralleling the experience of Blindness with Mental Illness, Cuthand deftly elucidates that any of us could lose any of our abilities at any time. FeFF WINNER, Best Experimental FeFF 2014.
Assini, directed by Gail Maurice. Western Movies are a part of Assini's life. John Wayne is a hero. When she finds out she's nothing but a stupid scalping Redskin Injun, she tailspins into a pit of denial and hatred until eventually she accepts herself and triumphs over the Cowboy to become the proud INDIAN that she is.
Without Words, directed by Jules Koostachin. Without Words speaks to the collective experience of trauma and hope regardless of cultural identity. It is a story about two survivors, one of the Holocaust and the other a survivor of the Canadian Residential school system who cross paths at a city park in Northern Ontario. Their stories of resilience, survival and hope interweave sparking the journey of healing to commence
Lunch Box Loser, directed by Virginia Abramovich. Aspiring stand-up Natasha Marakova would rather practice her routine alone in the bathroom than deal with grade school politics. When her hideout is busted, Natasha must find her place in the lunchroom. Lunchbox Loser is a dark comedy, about owning who you are and eating it with pride.
Little Questions, directed by Virginia Abramovich. Using the simple questions of a child as a powerful lens, Little Questions follows the journey of a young girl as she sets out on a quest to understand what is war.
Holodomor: Voices of Survivors (Ukrainian Famine/Genocide) directed by Ariadna Ochrymovych. Survivors recount the horrors of living through the little known Ukrainian Famine/Genocide, engineered by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin in 1932-33. Over five million people died, as brigades forcibly confiscated all livestock, grain and foodstuffs; the Ukrainian elite was decimated and hundreds of thousands who opposed collectivization were sent to the Gulag. Journalists were barred from Ukraine and borders were closed. No one spoke of this atrocity until 1991 when Ukraine gained independence. But the consequences of this genocide continue to reverberate today as Ukraine struggles to become a true democracy.
