Cape Breton Fiddle Workshop with Troy MacGillivray
The Scottish Fiddlers of L.A. are pleased to present an afternoon workshop with Nova Scotian fiddler, pianist and step dancer Troy MacGilivray, where the focus will be on the tunes commonly played for step and square dancing on Cape Breton Island. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn the rhythms, swing, fingered embellishments and bowing techniques used by fiddlers to make people want to stay on the dance floor until the wee hours of the morning. Troy will also demonstrate the steps associated with the dances in an effort to further understand how the tunes should be played to support the dancers. The workshop will conclude with a jam session, where people will be able to apply what they've learned and continue to absorb the infectious rhythms of some of the more popular dance tunes on the island.
**Because the goal will be to concentrate on style, technique, and rhythm, this workshop is open to fiddlers who are either moderate to fast learners of tunes by ear OR should be able to read sheet music. Tunes will be taught fairly briskly before emphasis is placed on style and technique.
