Treasure of the Sierra Madre
How great is Humphrey Bogart? Here he is in his THIRD appearance at the Whiteside since last year's presentation of Casablanca. You can bet his classic In a Lonely Place is coming somewhere down the line at the Whiteside.
As with The African Queen, the director is John Huston, who took the cast on location (rare for this time) to shoot for months around Mexico. He cast his own father, Walter Huston, in a key role, causing Bogart to quip that "one Huston is bad enough, but two are murder."
A classic tale of madness and the corrupting influence of greed, it was admired by Stanley Kubrick, Sam Raimi, and other influential directors. Paul Thomas Anderson counts it as his favorite film, and we can see the influence in "There Will Be Blood." PTA watched Sierra Madre nightly as he was writing his script.
