The SAME Initiative- Seattle Awake Music Exchange
Achon Uganda Childrens Fund Board member Maureen Brotherton and her husband, Joe Brotherton started this initiative to support AUCF through a musical exchange called the Seattle Awake Music Exchange. The goal is to provide funding support to Kristina Health Clinic, located in the village of Awake (pronounced Ah wah kay) and to help the villagers of Northern Uganda combat the epidemic of HIV/AIDS.
This project is the result of Maureens chance encounter with Jim Fee and Julius Achon in 2010 while on a trip bringing women from her village (Seattle) to Aminocira, a village in the North of Uganda. It was then that she joined in their efforts to make Juliuss dream of building a health clinic a reality. The idea, Women of My Village to Women of Your Village led to the idea of a Music of My Village exchange. Maureen and Joe have fond memories of musical greetings and farewells from Villagers over the years of their visits to the North of Uganda.
In 2014 Maureen brought popular NW drummer Faustine Hudson from the Maldives on an exploratory trip. It was Faustines first trip to Africa and she was inspired. She raised funds for reusable menstrual pads to help keep young girls in school. The project was carried out by the Kristina Health Clinic and had tremendous impact on the clinic as well as the girls.
This year Maureen and Joe have invited Faustine to return and added two of their favorite singers and songwriters, Brent Cowles (You Me & Apollo) Mikey Gervais (Mikey & Matty) to share their music with the African villagers. Faustine will continue to work on the menstrual pad project, which she has dubbed, Operation Menstruation and support Brent & Mikey in providing music on the trip. The entourage will travel for two weeks sharing the power of music with Villagers. Before, during and after the trip, the participants will be raising funds to support an outreach program addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. HIV/AIDS continues to devastate the lives of women and children in Awake, Northern Uganda. All travel expenses for all of the participants will be underwritten by Joe and Maureen Brotherton, so any donations go directly to the clinic.
After your tax deductible donation is made, please send an email to MaureenBrotherton@live.com to let her know your gift is inspired by SAME. When we return, you will be invited to a live performance (one in Portland and one in Seattle) at which time we will show a short documentary about the trip.
