Vancouver is recognized internationally as a centre for creative music. On March 24-26, 2016, Barking Sphinx hosts the third annual Improvised Music Meeting, featuring artists from Vancouvers hotbox of improvisation.
As part of 2016 Vancouver Improvised Music Meeting, Barking Sphinx Performance Society in partnership with the Western Front will present Toronto-based trumpeter, composer and bandleader Lina Allemano in concert with Vancouvers Ben Brown on drums, Cole Schmidt on guitar, James Meger on bass, Lisa Miller on piano and Lee Hutzulak on electronics. Allemano has rapidly established herself on the international improvised music scene in recent years. For the IMM, Allemano will create new work with local improvisers at the Western Front on Saturday, March 26.
The 2016 Improvised Music Meeting will be three nights of exhilarating music featuring Vancouvers finest innovators. In addition to Allemano, the IMM will feature guest artist, Seattle vocalist, musician and composer Robin Holcomb.
Experience the unexpected as these phenomenal musicians perform magic over the three nights from solo sets to large ensemble works led by Allemano.
Formed in 1998, Barking Sphinx is a collective of exceptional musicians; members of Vancouvers improvised music scene who are well known locally, nationally and internationally giving our city an international name as a significant centre of contemporary music and musique actuelle. Concerts presented by Barking Sphinx provide the chance to see and hear some of the worlds finest improvising musicians concoct an intoxicating brew of sounds and music.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of BC through Community Gaming Grants & the City of Vancouver through Cultural Services. Special thanks to the Western Front for co-presenting the March 26 concert featuring Lina Allemano, and our media sponsors CiTR and Discorder.
