We are delighted to present from Austin, Texas the Austin Piazzolla Quintet who specializes in the music of the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla as well as original nuevo tango compositions. Founded by James Anderson (violin), the APQ has been performing to captivated audiences since 2009. With Jonathan Geer (piano), Mike Maddux (accordion, bandoneon), Tony Rogers (cello), and Pat Harris (bass), all from diverse musical backgrounds, the band continues the tradition of nuevo tango and unique arrangements of Piazzolla's compositions, innovative original works, and fiery improvisation. Beautiful, romantic and skillful their music exemplifies the intensity and sexiness of tango.

EN TANGO'S PERFORMERS AND ARTISTS
Violinist JAMES ANDERSON has been hailed by critics as a violinist "who bucks tradition," a "world class violinist, improviser, and composer," and "the most swinging violinist in Colorado." A Fort Collins, Colorado native and violinist since age five, James is at home in a number of musical arenas including classical, jazz, tango, bluegrass, and rock to name a few. After graduating from high school in 2003, James continued his music studies at the University of Northern Colorado with a violin scholarship. While at UNC, James became an active performer on the Colorado Front Range - performing more that 100 concerts of all types every year - and would become the concertmaster of the various, award-winning UNC orchestras. After graduating with honors, James was accepted to the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England for graduate studies. While in England, James became a regular on the vibrant London jazz scene while studying alongside some of the world's finest classical performers such as the Belcea String Quartet and the London Symphony Orchestra. James has been featured in concert halls around the globe including London's Wigmore and Barbican Halls, and the Sala Mozart in Zaragosa, Spain. James has performed with some of world's greatest fiddlers such as Mark O'Connor, Doug Kershaw, Christian Howes, Alex Hargreaves, and Darol Anger; has performed with tango legends Pablo Ziegler, Hector del Curto, Pablo Giraudo, and Gustavo Casanave; has collaborated with such artists as Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Marcia Ball, Fyfe Dangerfield, Carolyn Wonderland, Grant Gordy, Bruce Adolphe (aka The Piano Puzzler); has opened for acts including Stanton Moore, Ben Taylor, and Railroad Earth; has recorded for both film and television including the soundtrack to the major motion picture "Bernie" starring Jack Black and NBC's "Smash"; and has been a soloist and chamber musician featured with orchestras and chamber music festivals around the country. Now based in Austin, Texas, James is an in demand violinist and teacher on the vibrant music scene. His tango band, The Austin Piazzolla Quintet, has been hailed as "one of the country's foremost tango ensembles," "sublime," "tango at it's best," and "a phenomenally polished and exciting ensemble."
Pianist JONATHAN GREER'S music has appeared on Archer, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Family Guy and numerous other shows. He has also composed soundtracks for games appearing on Mac, PC, Nintendo DS and iPhone/iPad. He currently lives in Austin, TX and performs regularly with the Austin Piazzolla Quintet and Waterloo Trio.
Bassist PAT HARRIS is a consummate musician who is also a songwriter and composer currently residing in upstate New York. With musical roots in classical, jazz, and American traditions, he maintains an active and multi-genre performance schedule. Originally from Michigan, Harris graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in classical bass performance and a minor in philosophy from Central Michigan University in 2007. He earned his Master's degree in jazz studies with academic honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009.
Harris records and tours nationally and internationally with the award winning nuevo tango ensemble THE AUSTIN PIAZZOLLA QUINTET, and has been a mainstay with the acclaimed songsmith REED TURNER. As an in demand sideman, he has contributed his bass playing and arranging to countless performances and recordings with artists including James Anderson, John Arndt, Carter Arrington, Chris Bell, Javier Chaparro, Floyd Domino, Paul Glasse, Rich Harney, Phoebe Hunt, Masumi Jones, Aaron Lack, Lex Land, Jake Langley, Kevin Lovejoy, Wayne Salzmann, Steve Schwelling, David Sierra, David Stevens, Peter Stoltzman, Mitch Watkins, Revel, and the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Harris has composed instrumental music for commercials and radio, and has released three albums through his own Wigglestump Records label: Live 4/9/09 (2009), Traveling By Moonlight (2011), and Hour Before the Mourning (2013). His newest album of original material, recorded under the name THE FORGOTTEN PROPHETS, titled The End, will be released on January 12, 2016.
In addition to performing and writing music, Harris blogs extensively about his experiences as a musician in an ever changing industry and other observations through the "Thoughts" page on his website. He is currently working on his first philosophical book On the Value of the Live Experience.
Cellist TONY ROGERS is also educator, performer, arranger and composer. He performs classical and modern folk/rock/electronic genres, both amplified and traditional. He has composed and recorded soundtracks for films and documentaries, playing several instruments including guitar, ukulele, accordion, and piano.
In Austin performs regularly with: argentinian-tango band "APQ" (Austin Piazzolla Quintet), the classical piano trio instrumental music "The Waterloo Trio", world music band Mundi, with Jenifer Jackson on stage, the multi-genre group Strings Attached, performs weddings on weekends, and onstage with symphonies, playing 70 public performances per year, teaches a few hundred lessons and directs the Austin Cello Choir every week on Tuesday evenings for advancing cellists. In his spare time he enjoys recording, new technology, political discourse, and computing.
Accordian, Bandoneonist and Pianist MIKE MADDUX has had a long and varied musical career. His original instrument is piano, but he eventually added accordion, which is now his primary performance instrument, and is studying bandoneon. He studied jazz with David Baker at Indiana University. A musical chameleon, he has played jazz, classical, blues, rock and roll, country, vallenato, salsa, klezmer, bluegrass, tango, nuevo tango, and most likely other styles that he can't think of right now. He has also performed in theatrical works and appears on accordion in Richard Linklater's movie, The Newton Boys. Currently he plays accordion and bandoneon with the Austin Piazzolla Quintet, and with the Austin trio, Hora Once.
