PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Elephant's Child is based on Rudyard Kipling's beloved tale from The Just-So Stories, teaching life lessons through the adventures of curious characters. The Elephant's Child is a story about the importance and power of being true to your own inner nature and following natural curiosities wherever they may lead.  Live drumming by Abdoulaye Diallo and band, and narration by Rosemary Luke.

Abdoulaye Diallo is a native of Senegal, West Africa. He is a drummer and drum maker from a region of Africa rich with artists. Abdoulaye has taught and performed throughout Monterey County. Abdoulaye has been playing drums for more than 20 years. He teaches the traditional rhythms that he learned from his elders. Abdoulaye has a deep respect for the tradition and through his performances and classes hopes to expose the community to just a small part of West African culture.

Rosemary  Luke has been directing and performing on the stages of the Monterey peninsula for the last 3 decades. She first met Fran Spector Atkins when she participated in one of her classes in Carmel Valley over 20 years ago. She's been a fan ever since. This is Rosy's first time performing with Fran's dance company and she's thrilled to be a part of such a vibrant and exciting production.

Don't Look Back In spring 2011, SpectorDance Youth Company collaborated with Zoe Boekbinder,  an Oakland, CA based performer who possesses a masterful command of the live looping station applied to her acoustic instruments and vocals. Zoe's overall performance is an animated cabaret style experience with vocals approaching operatic range. Her complex lyrical approach and sense of humor keeps audiences leaning forward to catch every word. Zoe has toured for the past five years sharing stages with acts such as Amanda Palmer, the Dresden Dolls & The Ditty Bops. Her earlier band project "Vermillion Lies" headlined venues such as San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and Circo de Braga in Portugal.  Don't Look Back will be performed this summer in Rome, Italy as part of the Cultural Bridges Program.

Storm In 2011, SpectorDance collaborated with Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to create Ocean, a dance media project about the impact of human activity on our world ocean and climate change. Storm is a section of from Ocean that will be performed this summer in Rome, Italy as part of the Cultural Bridges Program.

Grace is a new dance piece inspired by Bach's Brandenburg Concerto, one of the most famous of Bach's pieces. It has been used by Walt Disney in his movies, and accompanied astronauts on trips into space! The melodies of this joyous music are recognizable to broad populations. So feel free to hum, tap your foot, or dance along.
