Seattle premiere After more than a century of film, American cinemas are rapidly abandoning 35mm projection and going digital. Small screens around the country are closing down, and film projectors and projectionists put out of commission. In The Dying of the Light, Peter Flynn documents a handful of experts and enthusiasts who are trying to preserve cinemas original medium, if only in memory. The return of large format film with Quentin Tarantinos The Hateful Eight could signify a resurgence of appreciation for the art of film projection. For the first time in decades, projectors destined for the scrap heap are being restored and recommissioned for the theatrical release of Tarantinos film. In Flynns documentary, the men and women whove spent their lives in projection booths explain what makes film projection an art and why its so important, as they attempt to save what they can from a disappearing industry.
