The Wheatland Chorale: "Songs of Innocence" Concert
NOT A SINGLE ORDINARY MOMENT Escape from the ordinary with a performance by the Wheatland Chorale. Known throughout the region for its shimmering sound, with artistic director, Eric R. Riley, this ensemble has reached new heights of artistry.
Our Spring, 2016 series, "Songs of Innocence", is centered in the most popular collection of poetry by William Blake (1757-1827), Songs of Innocence. We present two contrasting musical settings of poems from this collection, by American composer Earl George and British composer Bob Chilcott. George's unaccompanied settings range from serenely beautiful to rhythmically active, with changing meters to reflect word stress and just enough harmonic spice to keep things interesting. Chilcotts "Jazz Songs of Innocence" are set for womens voices and jazz trio (piano, bass, drums) and distill many of the elements of American jazz into an appealing variety of treatments.
The innocent sound of Renaissance polyphony introduces each half in the form of movements from the Missa Brevis of the Italian master Palestrina. The second half includes the powerful "Famine Song" arranged by Mathew Culloton and the glorious "Luminous Night of the Soul" by Ola Gjeilo. A benediction to the concert is provided by Gjeilo in the form of "The Ground", a sincere prayer ending with an appropriate plea for peace dona nobis pacem.
The concert will be offered at three venues in Lancaster, York and Wyomissing. Visit our website at www.WheatlandChorale.org!
