San Jose Symphonic Choir presents a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna. Music Director Leroy Kromm directs the Choir and the Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose, accompanied by Nova Vista Symphony in the beautiful Mission Santa Clara Church.
Orff's Carmina Burana, written in 1935-36, is one of the best-known and loved choral works in the world. Based on a series of anonymous medieval poems, the text (in medieval Latin, German, and French) considers the ancient divinity Fortuna, whose fickleness in bestowing and withdrawing fortune contributes to the ephemeral nature of life. The cycles of the piece describe the joys of Spring, and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling, and lust.
Lux Aeterna was written in 1997 in memory of Lauridsen's mother. Quietly serene, the piece's deep emotion contemplates light and its universal appeal and symbolism of hope, reassurance, and comfort.
Free preconcert lecture at 7:15 by Anthony Quartuccio, Music Director of Nova Vista Symphony.
