Deckle Edge Workshop - Plotting Strategies for Short Stories, Novels, and Plays
About the Workshop: Consider how plot structure helps writers convey a more compelling story. Participants will learn about a variety of models that have been proposed by experts and teachers like Christopher Vogler (The Writer's Journey), James Scott Bell (Write Your Novel From the Middle), Blake Snyder (Save the Cat), and Paula Munier (Plot Perfect). In addition to having the chance to compare techniques, participants will receive brief exercises they may use to determine what methods could enhance their writing. That participants will explore methods for conveying the stories they wish to tell and have a better understanding of how to develop plots that captivate an audience. Handouts listing online and print resources as well as providing some plot structure strategies will be provided. This workshop is best suited for: Writers of all experience levels. About the Instructor: A legislative attorney and former law librarian, Paula Gail Benson's short stories have appeared online in Kings River Life and the Bethlehem Writers Roundtable, and in print in Mystery Times Ten 2013, A Tall Ship, a Star, and Plunder (2014), A Shaker of Margaritas: That Mysterious Woman (2014), and Fish or Cut Bait: a Guppy Anthology (2015). With New York Times Bestselling author Robert Dugoni, she wrote "A Matter of Honor," which appears in Killer Nashville Noir: Cold-Blooded (2015). For her church's drama ministry, she has written fourteen plays and programs. Currently, she serves as President of the Palmetto Chapter of Sisters in Crime; a Member-at-Large of the Guppy Chapter of Sisters in Crime's Steering Committee; and Public Relations officer for the Mystery Writers of America's Southeast Chapter.
