This four mile long, mildly strenuous hike is a magical trip through moonlit gardens, meadows, and woods. Discover how the striking landscape of the Arboretum changes under the moon and stars of the night sky. Your guide will share points of special interest and seasonal highlights. The two-hour walk over hilly and uneven terrain is a brisk hike, not a garden tour. Ages 16 and up. No pets on the hike, please.
This is a hike to appreciate the beauty of the arboretum at night and is not a guided tour of the arboretum collections. The group will hike approximately four miles at a brisk pace over hilly and uneven terrain for two hours with minimal stops. Please be sure that you and your guests are comfortable with this level of activity.
To make your experience more enjoyable, please note the following guidelines:
Entrance will be through the R Street gate only (off Bladensburg Road). Free parking is available just inside the gate.
Please arrive 15 - 30 minutes prior to the start of the hike. The group will leave the building promptly at the start time. The arboretum gate will be locked at the hike start time and no one will be allowed to enter after the program has started. The arboretum gates are locked daily at 5:00 p.m. and will reopen to hikers 30 minutes prior to the start of the hike. Note that hike start times vary. If you plan to register a guest, please make sure they receive this information. This will help them to be better prepared to enjoy the hike.
Flashlights adapted for night vision will be carried by the guide and volunteers only. The guide will ask the group to keep talking to a minimum to enhance the experience.
We recommend that you wear sturdy walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather forecast. Sorry, no pets or children under 16 allowed.
Weather and Cancellations Hikes will be held in many types of weather including light rain or snow. If the arboretum cancels the hike due to threat of inclement weather or unsafe conditions, you will be contacted email the afternoon of the hike and offered a refund or an opportunity to reschedule.
