International Writers Series: Viet Thanh Nguyen and Vu Tran
A special conversation with heralded Vietnamese-American debut novelists Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of The Sympathizer, and Vu Tran, author of Dragonfish. Both books, in various ways, struggle to come to terms with legacies of the Vietnam War and both were named to the New York Times Book Reviews Best Books of 2015 lists. The Sympathizer, winner of the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, is a sly subversion of war and espionage writing and has been hailed by Maxine Hong Kingston as a novel of literary, historical, and political importance. Dragonfish, a spellbinding blend of crime noir and literary ghost story, stretches from Malaysian refugee camps after the fall of Saigon to the seedy underworld of modern Las Vegas. Dinaw Mengestu has called the book that rare hybrid marvela literary thriller, a narrative of migration and loss that upends the conventions of any form.
