SCRAPE
In partnership with the Seattle Youth Symphony, the innovative string ensemble Scrape will perform music by Jim Knapp and Brian Chin. The Universal Language Project has commissioned Knapp and Chin to create a new sound for Scrape featuring soprano soloist Chérie Hughes.
Scrape is an unconducted string ensemble performing the works of Jim Knapp and various guest composers. Our instrumentation is 15 bowed strings, with harp and electric guitar.
Tonight's Program:
Obamatorio - A song cycle for Soprano and Scrape. A musical interpretation of words from President Barack Obama, Brian Chin.
Only Those Who Have Dared is a dance/theatre piece based on an aphorism by Miester Eckhart, the German medieval mystic priest whose teaching resembled Zen Buddhism as much as Roman Catholicism, Jim Knapp.
A Letter is an imagined letter written a year ago to a former student of my wife, Joan Skinner who had inquired about coming to Seattle to resume her studies of Skinner Releasing, Jim Knapp.
Charles Who? is a meditation on Charles Ives The Unanswered Question, Jim Knapp.

Jim Knapp grew up in Chicago, received Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music Composition from the University of Illinois and currently lives in Seattle, Washington with his wife Joan Skinner. He has played trumpet, piano and bass in a variety of idioms including jazz, free improvisation, big band, chamber music, R & B, C & W, Country Rock, and Afro Pop. His music is recorded on a variety of American and European labels including ECM and Origin. He has taught Theory in the Jazz Program of Cornish College of the Arts for over 40 years. He has led and composed music for many groups including the Composers and Improvisers Orchestra, the Jim Knapp Orchestra, Ohio Howie and the Temple of Boom and Scrape.
Yamaha Artist Brian Chin is an international soloist, advocate for social justice through music, and the founder and Artistic Director of Common Tone Arts, a non-profit organization inspiring positive change through arts education and creative music. Brian is also an active composer and improviser; performs with the innovative ensemble TORCH; appears regularly with the Seattle Symphony; is the retired Principal Trumpet of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; and is Head of Instrumental Music at Seattle Pacific University.
