The Improviser's Mind Set - Creative Thinking For Complex Problems
Lifestage, Inc, SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0270
Applied Improvisation - the use of techniques, exercises, and games employed in theatrical improvisation for real-life goals - is one of the most effective methods for dealing with complex situations. Social workers, therapists, educators and trainers are involved with problems relating not just to individuals and their private concerns, but large and small systems, and social forces. The ability to think creatively and make connections that might be difficult to find are powerful tools that can lead to discovery of previously unrecognized resources and possibilities. The mindset learned through Applied Improvisation taps into and utilize Interpersonal Neurobiology, which is the heart of social-emotional learning and growth. Researcher and author Dr. Dan Siegel identifies Interpersonal Neurobiology as the science of social connection, and this class will focusing on developing the mindset that is highly responsive, adaptive, and creative under pressure. The course will explore techniques that strengthen situational and emotional awareness, thinking on one's feet when under stress and the capacity to consider a range of possible approaches to a problem. Experiential techniques are designed to demonstrate principles of Interpersonal Neurobiology through Applied Improvisation. The workshop will provide ample opportunity to experience these techniques in real time, and debrief discussions about their impact and ways to implement them in practice.
OBJECTIVES: Provide an overview of the principles of Interpersonal Neurobiology as applied to clinical social work practice; Experience the ways that applied improvisation advances interpersonal connection; Explore applications of the improviser's mind set when under stress; Identify the 5 fundamental dimensions of the improviser's mind set and their relationship to the demands of social work practice; Identify subtle or hidden dynamics in social interactions and the improviser's approach to working effectively with those tensions; Learn techniques for shaping and influencing interactions toward therapeutic or educational goals.
