Directed by Ivan Nichev Bulgaria/Israel, 2014, 108 min Bulgarian, German, Ladino with English subtitles Houston Premiere Drama
Bulgarian Rhapsody recreates the vanished world of Bulgarian Jewish culture. A tale of lost innocence and first love set against the backdrop of WWII, the film deals with the friendship among three 17 year olds: Moni, a shy Jewish boy; Giogio, his worldly Bulgarian friend; and Shelly, a young woman whom both boys love.
Complicating matters is Giogio's father, an antisemite working for a government department in charge of deportations. A warm and tender film, Bulgarian Rhapsody was Bulgaria's entry into the 2015 Oscars.
