"The ALSO-RAN (For the BENEFIT of Miss JENNIE GOURLAY)"
Part of the "Best of the New Works Series", benefiting the 2016 New Works Series.
Written & Performed by: Billy Hipkins Directed by: Perry Dell'Aquila
Ever heard of Billy Hipkins? Or Jennie Gourlay? Didn't think so. That's because they are Theatre Also-rans; mere footnotes in theatre history. Until now... Jennie's shot at stardom was cancelled when Booth shot Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in 1865, and today Billy takes this very personally. Strong identification with Jennie? (He too had planned on stardom.) Or is his showbiz life a karmic payback? Did he shoot Lincoln? Was he Jennie Gourlay? And why does he love hoop skirts so much? Long over-due, here is her story, his story, and a bit of theatre history. A one-man journey through Also-ranism.

Emerging Artists returns with their one-of-a-kind festival, kicking off with a week of "Best of" encore performances from the last 3 years. Visit the theater any evening during this three-week event, and you'll find yourself transported in a number of surprising ways: by a single performer embodying a whole host of characters; by a more experimental theater piece "done differently" that challenges and delights; by a cozy two-person show exploring relationships; or perhaps by a bouncy new musical that will have you humming. Emerging Artists has always been about new works, new talents, new voices. That's never been more evident than now.
