Grape Pest and Disease Management for Western Washington
Raising wine and table grapes in Western Washington can be both rewarding and challenging. Rewarding for the wonderful flavors this region's climate and unique soils can foster, and challenging for the myriad pests and diseases that find it a welcoming environment as well. Learning how to deal with the challenges is key to successful harvests.
Join us for an immersive workshop on Grape Pest and Disease Management for Western Washington with Dr. Michelle Moyer, Assistant Professor and Extension Viticulturist and Gwen Hoheisel, Regional Extension Specialist from the WSU Viticulture and Enology Program in Prosser, WA.
Sponsored by the WSU Viticulture and Enology Program, WSU Snohomish County Extension, and WSU Extension you'll learn how to identify friends from foes and then devise a strategy to minimize their impact. Organic and conventional approaches will be covered. Full day participants will receive one copy of the new WSU Extension 2016 Grape Pest Management Guide and an opportunity to qualify for up to 5 WSDA Pesticide Certification Credits.
Morning session 9:00 am - Noon: We'll cover Brown Marmorated Stink Bug and Spotted Wing Drosophila biology and management, followed by hands-on time with microscopes to take a closer look at identifying these insects . Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing invasive species from native and beneficial species.
Then we'll cover Sprayer Best Practices where you'll gain an understanding of the environmental conditions that influence spray efficacy and drift, along with a discussion on how equipment choices and maintenance can influence any pest management program. Before lunch, we'll end with a hands-on session and learn how to properly calibrate backpack sprayers including how to change sprayer nozzles, maintain consistent pressure, and determine volume-per-acre necessary. Includes a discussion on whole-canopy (disease) vs. spot spraying (insects and weeds).
Afternoon session Calibrating sprayers saves money and helps make organic and conventional spray programs more effective. Calibrating sprayers saves money and helps make organic and conventional spray programs more effective.
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: After lunch we'll devote the afternoon to Designing Grapevine Disease Management Programs with a special emphasis on Powdery Mildew and Botrytis Bunch Rot disease biology and management strategies. Discussions will focus on integrating chemical and cultural practices for optimal control with an eye to modes-of-action rather than specific chemicals so it can be adapted to both organic and conventional management strategies.
Then, we'll work in small groups to practice designing a program you can put to use this season. Each group will be invited to share their strategies, be evaluated for content, feasibility, and cost. After joint discussion, the group with the most sustainable strategy will win a prize!
Full day participants will receive one copy of the new WSU Extension 2016 Grape Pest Management Guide and an opportunity to qualify for WSDA Pesticide Certification Credits.
Space is limited and pre-registration by March 17 is required.
