He never finished high school but rose to become president of Sears. He believed in Jewish values: tikkun olam, repairing the world, and tzedakah.
He built over 5,300 schools in the south in the early 20th century, joining forces with African American communities to educate youth and awarding fellowships to leading intellectuals and artists including Marian Anderson, James Baldwin, Julian Bond, Ralph Bunche, W.E.B. DuBois, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes and a host of others.
