Conflict: The Machine of Fiction by Karen Finneyfrock at Bloedel Reserve
Stories are their conflicts. In this workshop for writers working on a novel, we will use readings, discussion, and writing exercises to explore the inherent conflicts that make up the world of our stories: conflict with nature, society, law, and conflict between people.

Once we have brainstormed some conflicts, we will take a walk through Bloedel Reserve and allow nature to unravel the tensions tangled up in our books. Come prepared to write and walk.

Wear walking shoes and bring a notebook and pen.

About Karen Finneyfrock: Karen Finneyfrock is a poet and novelist in Seattle, WA. She is the author of two young adult novels: The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door and Starbird Murphy and the World Outside, both published by Viking Children's Books.

She is one of the editors of the anthology Courage: Daring Poems for Gutsy Girls and the author of Ceremony for the Choking Ghost, both released on Write Bloody press.

She is a former Writer-in-Residence at Richard Hugo House and teaches the Certificate in Young Adult Fiction at University of Washington and for the Seattle Arts and Lectures' Writers-in-the-Schools program. In 2010, Karen traveled to Nepal as a Cultural Envoy through the US Department of State to perform and teach poetry and in 2011, she did a reading tour in Germany sponsored by the US Embassy.
