SongLines: Exploring the roots of songwriting is an overview of the creative process involved in crafting songs and the artists whose work has come to define contemporary music. This is an introductory course appropriate for anyone with a desire to learn just what goes into writing a song, with a particular emphasis on lyric content. Musical ability may be advantageous in some respects but is not required. The first hour will take a look at the work of some of the most important songwriters of our time, paying close attention to context and style. The second hour will deal with the more technical aspects of lyric analysis, song form, and the marriage of lyric and melody.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: J.J. Pattishall earned his B.A. in Music from Rollins College with a concentration in Jazz Studies. Shortly after graduation he accepted a position as an adjunct professor of contemporary guitar studies for the Rollins Music Department where he taught for just over 10 years. Raised in a musical household J.J. was exposed to a diverse range of musical influences from an early age. These sounds continue to shape his overall musical conception today. Over the course of the past 20 years he has been fortunate to perform regularly as a freelance musician and instructor throughout the Central Florida region. Most recently, in addition to performance, his work has delved deeper into the creative process surrounding songwriting, arranging, and production.
Saturday, February 14 (1:00pm-3:00pm).
